How To Reduce A Fever In Babies


A fever can be a sign of illness though not always. Doctors say fever is a response of the immune system of a child to infections. Healthy children tolerate fever well, and it does not last more than five minutes usually. Viral infection is among the most common causes of fever in babies. It may also be due to teething. In younger babies, you should take it serious as it may be a severe infection.

Ways to reduce your baby’s fever

Giving your baby a lukewarm bath helps relax the baby. This way it helps to regulate the temperature of the body. In case your baby is less than six months give a lukewarm bath thrice a day. For older babies, you can bath them regularly with lukewarm water.

Cold compresses

When your baby has a fever, the first step should be to put a wet washcloth on their forehead. As the water evaporates from your baby’s skin, it draws out the fever as well, and the temperature comes down almost immediately. Soak a washcloth in water in a bowl and place on your baby’s forehead. When it is dry, soak it and repeat the process until the fever is no more.

 Brest milk

Breast milk is excellent for babies less than six months when they have a fever. Breast milk balances nutrients that strengthen the weak immune system of your baby and fight baby’s illness. It is easily and quickly digestible. It is also vital as it will properly hydrate the baby which is necessary for your baby’s recovery. Breastfeed your young baby frequently and keep them upright while breastfeeding as this makes them comfortable.

More fluids

It isessential to increase your baby’s fluid intake when they develop a fever. The fluid helps cool them down and consequently replace the fluid they lose through sweat. Dehydration leads to complications and delays recovery from fever. When babies have a fever, they refuse many fluids so give them small amounts often. Give oral rehydration as well as lukewarm water to replenish electrolytes and fluids.

Clothe your baby comfortable

Building up babies with layers of blankets or clothing is a mistake that you should avoid. This is because it can make clotheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetemperatures higher for the baby or make temperatures not go down. Babies can regulate their temperatures so bundling them in layers make it harder for them. Use a single layer of light clothing. Also, ensure your baby’s room is comfortable not too hot.

You can use these tips to cool your baby when they have a fever. Remember however to seek medical advice should the fever persist.
